Editor: Following on from Emma’s opinion piece here, she wants to share with you policy recommendations stemming from her research report Unheard Voices: East Belfast Pupils Have Their Say on Higher & Further Education. The full report can be downloaded by clicking here.

Policy recommendations for tackling underachievement in education, some are more radical than others. There is much good work already going on in some sectors but it is not NI wide;

  • Increased access to scholarships for those from low income backgrounds
  • Equal access to student funding for all students, including FE and Open University
  • Increased University outreach programs that work with the community
  • Partnerships between home and schools
  • Schools as community hubs
  • Restructure schooling system/Deconstructing Grammar Schools
  • School budget pupil premium
  • Reduced bureaucracy
  • Work based learning program for school leavers
