Her Loyal Voice is a project which was started in December 2019, as a way of amplifying the voices of loyalist women, the majority of who are not often given a platform to have their voices heard. To date Her Loyal Voice has undertaken interviews with loyalist women which are published on the HLV blog, a loyalist women’s engagement survey and now the publication of Unheard Voices.
While women’s voices are often unheard, loyalist women’s voices are rarely heard. From the conflict, policy or expressing views on contentious issues, loyalist women are often not given the opportunity to participate in the often male dominated political landscape in Northern Ireland. Unheard voices is about addressing this deficit.
HLV wanted to capture stories that would provoke debate, challenge and provide a springboard for government to truly engage with loyalist women, to understand and address their concerns. If we want to create a culture where different opinion is heard and respected, then loyalist women must be part of the conversation.
I am delighted that HLV has been able to add these voices to the conversation and I am forever grateful to those women who shared their stories with me.
